What to bring.

Pack light, but pack right — a few things make the difference between a good outing and a great one.

High-SPF sunscreen The dunes offer zero shade and the sand reflects the sun upward. Apply generously before you mount — reapplying mid-ride is trickier than it sounds.
A scarf or buff Wind picks up fine sand without warning. A loose wrap around your face keeps the ride comfortable and doubles as sun protection for your neck.
Sunglasses & a wide-brimmed hat Squinting across bright dunes for an hour takes a toll. Wrap-around sunglasses are best — they keep sand out as well as glare.
Plenty of water Bring more than you think you need. There is nothing to drink out on the dunes, and the dry heat is deceptively draining.
Camera or phone — secured The views from camelback are unlike anything else. Keep your device in a zipped pocket or bag — the rocking gait has a way of dislodging loose things.
Long, loose trousers The saddle sits differently than a horse — loose fabric over your legs prevents chafing and keeps the sun off on the way back.
